British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the beginning of the fight against the «shadow fleet» of Russian oil tankers used to circumvent international sanctions.

44 European states supported this plan at a meeting of the European Political Community held in the UK.

According to the statement, the joint «call to action» is aimed at disabling the fleet of about 600 vessels used by Moscow to transport about 1.7 million barrels of oil per day. The British government also announced sanctions against 11 tankers, which, in its opinion, carry Russian oil.

According to Starmer, these measures are «a clear signal to those who support Russia's attempts to avoid sanctions.» This Friday, the President of Ukraine will take part in a meeting of the British Prime Minister's cabinet.

The statement also noted that the Russian fleet of oil tankers poses an environmental threat to European waterways. Of the 11 tankers that have fallen under UK sanctions, 8 belong to the Russian state oil giant PJSC Sovcomflot (MCX), and 3 others have signs of belonging to the «shadow fleet».

As a result, more than 60 oil tankers are under sanctions by the authorities of the United States, Great Britain and the European Union. Of the 11 tankers, two have already been sanctioned by the EU.
