  • The US Congress will complete the procedure for certifying the results of the presidential election today. Kamala Harris, who lost the election and remains vice president of the U.S. Senate, will only play a ceremonial role, not having the right to challenge the results.


  • Political changes are expected in Canada: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is preparing to resign. According to the Globe and Mail, he may announce this as early as January 8th. The main reasons for this decision were economic difficulties and low ratings for Trudeau's Liberal Party (25% versus 38% for the Conservatives). Trudeau served three consecutive terms in office.  


  • North Korea conducted its first ballistic missile launch in 2025. The missile flew over 1,100 km and fell into the Sea of Japan, the South Korean military said.


  • In South Korea, the police have gained the right to arrest President Yoon Seok-Youl. The warrant was issued as part of an investigation into a case of mutiny and an attempt to impose martial law. The lawyers of the head of state consider it invalid.


  • Germany has called for the launch of Nord Stream amid the suspension of Russian gas transit through Ukraine. MP Sevim Dagdelen called on the German authorities to stop making «monetary gifts» to Kiev and «finally launch the Nord Stream.» She noted that high electricity prices are destroying German industry, and Kiev's support has become overly burdensome.
